In Sagrada, players take on the role of artisan glassmakers competing to construct the most stunning stained glass window for the iconic Sagrada Família basilica. Each artisan receives a personal window pattern board slipped into a cardboard frame, presenting a unique grid with specific color and shade (number) restrictions. Across ten rounds, vibrant translucent dice representing colorful glass fragments are drawn from a velvet bag and rolled into a communal pool, initiating a tense and tactical drafting phase.
Drafting mechanics are simple to learn yet deceptively deep. On your turn, you draft a die from the available pool and place it onto your window grid. Placements must adhere to strict architectural rules: each new die must be adjacent to an existing one, and adjacent dice may never match in color or number. Carefully balancing these placement puzzles while pursuing private secret objectives and public scoring goals requires foresight, flexibility, and tactical cunning.
To assist players when their options become tight, Sagrada introduces craft tool cards. By spending limited favor tokens, artisans can bend the standard placement rules—swapping dice positions, rerolling values, or ignoring certain restrictions. Because each game features a randomized setup of public objectives, private goals, and tools, every session presents a fresh and engaging spatial puzzle.
With a BGG complexity weight of approximately 1.93 / 5, Sagrada hits the sweet spot of being easy to teach to newcomers while offering satisfying strategic depth for experienced hobbyists. Designed for 1 to 4 players with an average play time of 30 to 45 minutes, it stands as an absolute modern classic in the dice-drafting and pattern-building genre.
